    Step-By-Step Guide to SEO Projects

    A lot of people dream about starting their own small business, blog, or e-commerce website so that they can become their own boss.

    Unfortunately, many of those people don’t have a proper plan in place for setting off and growing the business.

    Although most companies these days have a basic understanding of SEO principles, they don’t always necessarily know how to create an SEO project outline to help ensure their success.

    Without a plan, you won’t succeed.

    Today we’re going to outline six simple steps to create the perfect SEO project outline.

    Step 1 – Create a List of Relevant Keywords

    Although the days of stuffing articles full of keywords in an attempt to get the article ranked are long over, keywords still play a vital role in creating a smart SEO project outline.

    To start, think of 10 relevant keywords to your niche. Once you have that list of keywords, you can enter them into a tool like the Google Analytics or SEMRush to find variations that work well for your business.

    After analyzing all the related keywords for competition and search volume, you can then narrow down your list to 10 or 15 keywords that you would like to rank for. You can then break down this short list even further by listing your keywords in order of priority for your business.

    Once you have this list, you aren’t finished. You need to review and update this list at least once a month to keep your plan fresh and in line with trends.

    Step 2 – Map Out Focus Keywords for Specific Pages

    Once you have your keywords in mind, you then need to focus on how to rank for them. The best way to do this is to build multiple web pages that are focused on specific keywords instead of trying to rank for every keyword on one page.

    The amount of web pages that you should have depends a lot on your business. Think about all the products, locations, and offerings for your business. Once you’ve created a logical outline from them, the content of web pages that you have should coincide with it. If you do this, it makes it much easier for potential customers to find you in the search engine.

    Plan for every page to feature highly relevant information, images and infographics, and internal links to other pages on your site. This setup makes the user experience much more efficient and pleasant.

    Step 3 – Create a Blog

    Blogs are one of the best ways to increase your page rank. Every time that you write a blog, you’re creating a new page with new keywords that will rank in a search. No matter what industry you’re working in, blogs are helpful both for your page rank and for providing value to your readers and customers.

    You should try to post a blog at least once per week.

    However, it’s also important to remember that you’re writing primarily for your audience, not the search engine. If the search engine feels that you are only writing to try to rank for keywords, your site may be penalized and pushed down in the rankings.

    Step 4 – Formulate a Plan to Build Links

    Backlinks are one of the most important ways for you to increase your domain authority. While all of the previous tips centered on on-page tactics, building links is the most important off-site tactic to use.

    While it can be difficult to get started, one of the easiest ways is to find other businesses of similar size to yours. You can reach out and offer to mutually share each other’s links on related pages. Then as your business naturally grows, you can network out to get featured on industry directories online or organizations like the Better Business Bureau.

    You should also start sharing your material on social media in creative ways. Sometimes, people share your post on their site or link to your post.

    The most important thing is that you provide significant value to your readers so that other sites and bloggers would want to link to your page to help their own readers.

    Avoid any so-called “blackhat” SEO! In other words, don’t use spam bots to post links online for you randomly! In the long term, these tactics will lower your Google rankings.

    Step 5 – Stay Current! Always Update Content to Outmatch the Competition

    A lot of people out there set up their website, write a few posts, and take a hands-off approach to their growth.

    However, that’s the opposite of what you should be doing.

    One of the most important aspects of growth on your page is that you stay current with SEO trends and best practices. Although it can be difficult since SEO is such a fast-changing industry, there are plenty of great resources out there that you can use to keep yourself informed.

    And, as your business grows, so should your website! Release a page to coincide with every new product, location, and service you offer. Constantly blog about new events and changes in your industry.

    As your audience changes, take feedback from them periodically. Then evaluate those reviews and make changes to your web design accordingly.

    Step 6 – Track Your Progress

    It’s difficult to continue to improve if you aren’t tracking and measuring your results. Luckily, there are several metrics programs which you can measure daily, weekly, and monthly to see what’s working for you and what isn’t.

    If you sign up with for a Google Analytics account, for example, you can measure the amount of traffic that’s coming to your site each month, where they came from, and what pages people are visiting the most often.

    You can also track metrics like ROI, inbound links, keywords, and your rankings in the different search engines. Tracking all of these on a regular basis will help you recognize your success, areas of opportunity, and what you can be doing differently to improve your website.

    The best time to get started on your SEO plan was ten years ago. The second best time? Now. Although it may seem overwhelming at first, your site is never going to get ranked if you don’t start working on your SEO today.

    Maybe you write a blog post, reach out to one person about a backlink, or optimize just one page of your site. No matter what it is that you do, you should find at least one small aspect of your site to work on each day to ensure that you’re continually making progress.

    Once you have that SEO project outline in place, all that you have to do is follow through with it on a consistent basis and update it as you see fit.
